Dear Friends,
We have always believed that dance is a proactive, greatly functional art form. At times, both of us have felt “I’m an artist, a dancer with an individual, inimitable voice.” Losing in-person communication due to the COVID-19 pandemic, as humans around the world were equally constrained, dance and performing arts also lost their primary means of expression: live and in-person. We joined in a humbling of the human species.
We observed that when car and air traffic were brought to a standstill, sky and sea were cleansed – animals, insects and plants gained free reign. Life itself was unleashed: mankind is not the master of this planet. What have humans done? What should humans do in the future? Is art unnecessary or urgent? What is required of art? We began to live-stream performances from our rooftop to homes worldwide - a momentous global connection from microcosm to macrocosm.
While each and every body is unique and individual, our bodies are in and of the environment itself. It is possible to be aware of what is currently happening on this planet through our bodies and dance, and to change and heal at the individual level, within community, and extending beyond. We are extremely grateful for the grants and relief funds from the Department of Cultural Affairs Los Angeles, the Los Angeles County Department of Arts and Culture, California Arts Council, United States Artists, the Foundation for Contemporary Arts, Oregon Community Foundation, Arcane Collective, Doris Duke Foundation, California Small Business COVID-19 Relief Grant and to you, for making our work possible.
We include you in our circle of loved ones. If possible for you, please be among our supporters for next year.
Peace, health and fortitude.
Love,
Roxanne and Oguri
